So interestingly awesome that I can explore my
Facebook connectivity today! Thanks to
Netviz, a third-party application that helps me export my account links, I can
import the data into the software to make some easy social network
analysis. This is my first time conducting
social network analysis, and the results are pretty straightforward and
shallow. Anyway, it’s amazing to see my
network in a more graphically logical way.
Before I explain my network map, it is better to
understand some basic terminology of social network analysis:
Well, the graph below is based on my Facebook links. I filtered out quite a few nodes based on a minimum threshold of degree level. The area of the circles reflects the betweenness centrality of the node. To my surprise, Helen and KK has a strong linkage power. I know that they are not very active on FB, but they do help people to connect with each other! Wait a second, actually these betweeness centrality is calculated based on my friends’ graph, which means the big circles such as KK and Nahla plays an important role in helping me link peoples in my network, but they may play different roles in others’ social network.
What’s more? The clusters are well categorized: the
greatest cluster in green are the majority of links when I was in Michigan
State, whereas the purple part in the left stands for my classmates and friends
in East Lansing. The upper left cluster
contains my acquaintances in USANA business, and the lower left cluster
consists of my high school classmates.
The very right part is Kuhens family, and the very left tiny cluster is
my German friends. To be continue…
